EV Driver's Autumn Guide
Autumn tips from an experienced EV driver
We have compiled below some tips from an experienced EV driver for smooth EV travels and charging your EV on the go, also during colder Autumn days.
1. One app is enough
There's no need to juggle with multiple charging apps. With Fortum Charge & Drive's one single app, you can charge at over 44,000 stations across the Nordics, including Recharge, K-Lataus, Virta, IONITY, Lidl, Allego, and many more. Additional good news is that the Fortum Charge & Drive network just keeps growing—so one app & charging key really is enough.
2. Add payment method in advance
Before hitting the road, make sure that the Fortum Charge & Drive app is installed, you're logged in, and your credit card is added as a payment method. This saves time at the charging station.
3. One tap access: fast & easy
If you have a Fortum Charge & Drive charging card or key (RFID), simply tap it on the charger to start charging—it's quick, easy and always reliable. Don’t have one yet? You can order it directly through our app.
4. Check charger availability
Use the Fortum Charge & Drive app to see if chargers are free at your charging destination. If it looks busy, check alternative chargers or plan an alternative route with Fortum Charge & Drive's in-app Route Planner before you leave. Read more on Route Planner here.
5. Choose a charging stop with services
Not all charging stations are the same. Pick ones with fast chargers, multiple charging points, and services like toilets, cafés, or for instance covered areas—especially useful during rainy autumn days.
6. Avoid peak hours
Try to charge outside peak times, usually between 13:00–19:00. Be polite—move your car once you've charged enough to continue your trip.
7. Charge up to 80%
Most EVs charge more slowly after 80%, so stop at 80% to save time and to protect your EV's battery. Charging from 80–100% can take longer than from 0–80%.
8. Pack smart & drive smoothly
Colder autumn weather shortens your range. Therefore, pack only what you need—more weight = more energy used. Also, drive smoothly and use Eco Mode. In addition, remember to check your tire pressure before long trips—cold air lowers the tire pressure, increasing car's energy consumption.
9. Charge before heading home
If you’re staying overnight somewhere without a fast charger, bring your own cables to charge slowly overnight. Starting your return trip with a full battery means no early detours to charge.
